Golinelli Foundation Arts and Sciences Centre

A place where art, science, and technology dialogue

The context

The new pavilion fits within the lot owned by Fondazione Golinelli, on the first outskirts of the western area of Bologna, adding to the two existing bodies of the building and obtained from the redevelopment of the former industrial building, which took place in 2014.

Art and science supporting the growth process

The design of the new Golinelli Foundation Arts and Sciences Centre stems from Fondazione Golinelli’s desire to complete the Opificio complex, already among the most attractive educational and cultural centres in the metropolitan and regional territory. The new Pavilion is not only configured as a place to host exhibitions and meetings, but represents an idea of the future: a future in which education and training in art and science are fundamental elements for a process of growth.

The "heart" of the complex

The simply designed building consists of two legible and essential elements, separate but in continuous dialogue with each other.

The first element is the “heart,” a pavilion proper, an enclosed volume that houses the main activities and is characterized as pure semi-transparent geometry, reflecting its surroundings during daylight hours, bright at night. The exhibition core is a free plan parallelepiped measuring 30×20 meters, with an internal height of 8 meters; a large space of about 700 square meters with no partitions or rigid plan organizations, allowing for maximum flexibility. The free rectangular floor plan is in fact the framework in which to provide for the many activities that the Foundation promotes: exhibitions, conferences, shows, concerts, and projections find a perfect stage here.

Accompanying the flexibility in the use of the space are technological systems integrated with the architecture that allow for the regulation of light control, acoustic correction, and plant systems.

The metal superstructure

The other constituent element is the modular metal superstructure, a lattice that wraps around the pavilion, frees itself in the space and allows visitors to walk through it and stand on small panoramic terraces overlooking the city.

The exterior lighting of the lattice structure includes effective illumination of stairs, walkways and terraces useful for its enjoyment during the times when the structure is open to the public, and of a punctual and striking system of light blades that makes the lightness of the structure appear and dematerializes the volumes in a few horizontal and vertical cuts.

The material of the façade makes light the highly characteristic element of the project, emphasizing its variation throughout the day and the seasons; natural lighting, filtering from the perimeter walls, is regulated by the system of curtains present on all fronts and housed within the spacing of the pillars along the entire metal structure; artificial lighting is provided through LED spotlights movable on linear guides on the ceiling.
