A Piece of the Grande Brera

An architectural and cultural stratification that forms part of a larger narrative where contemporaneity and history interact with each other and the city.

Palazzo Citterio, an 18th-century historic building, is located in the heart of Milan on Via Brera. Over the years, it has undergone several restoration projects, contributing to the realization of the Grande Brera project. Together with the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense, it forms a unique cultural hub for the Braidense institutions, while also expanding exhibition spaces dedicated to modern and contemporary art.

MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects curated the design for two of the three floors of Palazzo Citterio. The ground floor features the entrance hall and the courtyard, which includes a wooden pavilion, while the first floor hosts the permanent collections.

The Installation that Builds Community

The project led by MCA aims to return a culturally and socially significant piece of the city to the community, symbolizing a renewed connection between the diverse facets of Brera. This vision drove the creation of inclusive spaces, designed to welcome, build community, and express a new kind of social engagement.

The entrances to Palazzo Citterio at 12 and 14 Via Brera are designed not just as access points but as living spaces that encourage interaction. The installations spark curiosity about the artistic heritage housed within, such as the Jesi and Vitali collections.

In the future, the courtyard, connected to the Orto Botanico di Brera, will feature a bistro with a view of the garden, enhancing the cultural experience.

L’allestimento che genera comunità

Obiettivo del progetto firmato da MCA è quello di restituire alla collettività un pezzo di città dall’alto valore culturale e sociale, simbolo di un rinnovato collegamento tra le diverse anime di Brera. Da qui la scelta di sviluppare spazi “inclusivi”, capaci cioè di accogliere, creare comunità e diventare espressioni di una nuova socialità.

Gli ingressi di Palazzo Citterio, al civico 12 e 14 di via Brera, entrambi aperti al pubblico, non sono quindi pensati per essere semplici luoghi di accesso, ma diventano essi stessi spazi in cui abitare e vivere la città grazie ad allestimenti che stimolano l’aggregazione e al contempo incuriosiscono i visitatori sul patrimonio artistico lì custodito, come le collezioni Jesi e Vitali.

In futuro, sarà possibile entrare a Palazzo Citterio anche dal cortile, collegato all’Orto Botanico di Brera, dove sarà presente un bistrot con vista sul giardino.

The Tempietto

Located in the courtyard of Palazzo Citterio and accessible from 12 Via Brera, the circular Tempietto acts as a bridge between the exterior and the various spaces of the Grande Brera.

This contemporary component offers access to the adjacent garden near the Orto Botanico, providing visitors with a covered space for resting and contemplation. The installation dialogues with the Pinacoteca, drawing inspiration from Raphael’s “The Marriage of the Virgin” while also representing a leap toward modernity, emblematic of Palazzo Citterio’s collections.

Constructed in wood with clean, rhythmic lines alternating between horizontal and vertical elements, the Tempietto’s design enhances its aesthetic while ensuring easy assembly and disassembly on-site. Inside, a suspended canopy creates light effects, evoking a sacred atmosphere.

The Tempietto was donated by Salone del Mobile.Milano to the Pinacoteca di Brera.

Il Tempietto

Collocato nella corte di Palazzo Citterio e accessibile da via Brera 12, un tempietto di forma circolare funge da punto di raccordo tra l’esterno e i vari ambienti della Grande Brera. Una componente contemporanea che dà accesso al giardino accanto all’Orto Botanico offrendo ai visitatori uno spazio coperto dove sedersi e sostare. L’installazione “dialoga” con la Pinacoteca, traendo ispirazione dall’opera di Raffaello “Lo sposalizio della Vergine” lì esposta, e segna allo stesso tempo un’incursione verso la modernità di cui le collezioni di Palazzo Citterio sono l’emblema.

La struttura in legno, dalle linee estremamente pulite e ritmata dall’alternanza di montanti orizzontali e verticali, è progettata per essere visibile ai visitatori. Questa scelta progettuale valorizza l'estetica dell'ambiente e ne facilita l'assemblaggio e lo smontaggio direttamente in loco. All’interno, un velario pende dalla cupola, generando giochi di luce e richiamando un’atmosfera di sacralità.

With its curved lines and integrated seating, the table embraces visitors arriving from outside, offering a meeting and resting point. This multifunctional design follows universal design principles, incorporating specific considerations to enhance accessibility.

The structure features a monolithic steel base with contrasting wooden shelves that function as support surfaces and seating. The mirrored base visually expands the boundaries of the space, making it more welcoming.

Situated in a captivating environment, the table is also intended to guide visitors in discovering the Grande Brera and its collections. Positioned in front of a large LED screen showcasing works by digital artists, the structure takes on the form of an amphitheatre, inviting visitors to pause and admire select pieces of art.

La Hall d’Ingresso

La hall d’ingresso del Palazzo, accessibile da via Brera 14, è un altro spazio aperto alla comunità. In un ambiente completamente rinnovato, un tavolo-scultura, un oggetto organico e contemporaneo è stato concepito e disegnato per integrare allo stesso tempo le funzioni di ticketing, info point e bookshop.  Grazie alle linee curve e alle sedute incorporate, “abbraccia” le persone che arrivano dall’esterno, offrendo un punto d’incontro e di riposo. Una progettazione polifunzionale basata sull’universal design, che ha visto l’applicazione di particolari accorgimenti progettuali.

La struttura è caratterizzata da una parte monolitica in acciaio da cui emergono, in un contrasto di materiali, ripiani in legno che fungono da spazi di appoggio e sedute. La scelta del materiale specchiante per la base amplia visivamente i confini dello spazio da vivere, rendendolo più accogliente.

Il tavolo è inserito in un ambiente suggestivo ed è pensato anche per accompagnare le persone a scoprire la Grande Brera e le collezioni.

La struttura, disposta di fronte a un grande schermo led su cui scorrono immagini di artisti digitali, assume così la forma di un anfiteatro, dando la possibilità ai visitatori di fermarsi ad ammirare alcune opere d’arte.

“Palazzo Citterio is not a stand-alone building; it exists in close relationship with its surrounding environment, becoming part of a broader vision: the Grande Brera, a city within the city, a system that reveals the beauty that inhabits it. With this installation, characterized by contemporary interventions in dialogue with history, we aimed to shape a new way of conceiving museums. The challenge lies in making these spaces part of everyday life, spaces capable of reflecting and narrating new ways of existing together. In this way, Palazzo Citterio becomes part of daily life - a place to experience beauty as well as community and connection.”

Il Piano Nobile

Dedicato all’esposizione delle collezioni permanenti, il primo piano o piano nobile ospita le opere delle famiglie Jesi e Vitali che un tempo abitavano le due ali del Palazzo.

Un’atmosfera domestica accompagna, dunque, l’allestimento di questi spazi, con le sale adiacenti a via Brera che ospitano la collezione Jesi e quelle affacciate sul giardino interno la collezione Vitali. Negli spazi delle due collezioni abbiamo inoltre cercato di armonizzare i colori e valorizzare l’illuminazione.

Apposite teche sono state disegnate dallo Studio per valorizzare alcune opere delle due collezioni e per integrarsi armoniosamente con l’architettura delle sale affrescate.

Un dialogo tra modernità e storia che si ritrova anche nella Sala degli Specchi allestita con un tavolo espositivo che ospita reperti archeologici disposti in teche di diversa altezza a richiamare l’immagine di uno skyline urbano. Il tavolo è il risultato della combinazione di due elementi che si uniscono armoniosamente mantenendo però allo stesso tempo la capacità di esistere autonomamente.

Rievocando l’immagine dei salotti dei palazzi storici, lo Studio ha allestito al primo piano anche uno spazio lettura, dove i visitatori hanno la possibilità di fermarsi per un momento di riposo e di consulto dei libri esposti. In una stanza attigua, inoltre, è stata ricavata una libreria per l’esposizione di pergamene e libri antichi dal restauro di precedenti armadiature in legno.
