The Municipality of Fano and the Fondazione Montanari have joined forces to breathe new life into the Federiciana Library. Our firm designed the renovation and extension of the city's historic library.
The restoration project of the Federiciana Library, adjacent to the Baroque Church of San Pietro in Valle, is aimed at reorganizing its pre-existing functions, through the reorganization of the offices and the precious volumes collected there since the second half of the 1600s. The project preserves the famous “Sala dei Globi” with its wooden shelves and its furnishings.

Il progetto di recupero della Biblioteca Federiciana, adiacente la barocca Chiesa di San Pietro in Valle, è finalizzato al riordino delle sue funzioni preesistenti, attraverso la riorganizzazione degli uffici e dei preziosi volumi ivi raccolti sin dalla seconda metà del ‘600. Il progetto preserva la celebre Sala dei Globi con le sue scansie lignee e i suoi arredi.

The new volume, like a transparent shrine, welcomes and guards four levels, plus a basement for the vault of the volumes to be preserved, and a panoramic terrace that opens onto large visual wings.
The public entrance leads to the ground floor which houses a conference room and some reception and service spaces. The internal architecture winds through cantilevered internal terraces, ‘suspended’ and slightly staggered, from the first level, which also hosts an event space, up to the fourth, to finally culminate in the roof with a panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. A fluid and continuous architectural gesture draws the organic forms of the terraces that welcome spaces dedicated to reading, stretched outwards, relating the internal architecture with the urban landscape, up to the blue horizon of the sea.

Mentre il progetto di recupero è volto a conservare l’edificio storico, il nuovo ampliamento prende forma dal vuoto creato dalla demolizione dell’edificio moderno preesistente e, in continuità con il disegno urbano contemporaneo, segna il passo tra la Fano storica e quella moderna aprendosi verso gli Orti, il porto e il lungomare Sassonia.
Il nuovo volume, come uno scrigno trasparente, accoglie e custodisce quattro livelli, più uno interrato per il caveau dei volumi da preservare, e una terrazza panoramica che apre su ampie quinte visive.
Dall’ingresso pubblico si accede al piano terra che ospita una sala conferenze e spazi di accoglienza e di servizio. L’architettura interna si snoda attraverso terrazze interne a sbalzo, ‘sospese’ e lievemente sfalsate, dal livello primo, che accoglie anche uno spazio eventi, fino al quarto, per infine culminare in copertura con una terrazza panoramica con vista sul mare. Un gesto architettonico fluido e continuo disegna le forme organiche delle terrazze che accolgono spazi dedicati alla lettura protesi verso l’esterno, mettendo in relazione l’architettura interna con il paesaggio urbano, fino all’orizzonte azzurro del mare.

Un attento studio del clima ha accompagnato il progetto. L’ottimizzazione dell’esposizione della facciata principale del nuovo volume, verso nord-ovest, per proteggersi dalla radiazione solare diretta, ha dato vita a un’illuminazione naturale ottimale, a beneficio di un maggior comfort visivo negli spazi di lettura, di un ridotto utilizzo dell’illuminazione artificiale e di una efficiente ventilazione naturale che sfrutta le brezze provenienti da nord in estate e durante le mezze stagioni.
